The ocean, often likened to the lungs of the planet, is the world's largest natural carbon sink. Now, companies such as Equatic, Captura, Running Tide and a startup called Ebb Carbon are using new technology to restore ocean chemistry and speed up its natural abilities. "We're restoring the balance in the ocean chemistry and enabling the ocean to absorb CO2 and convert it to a safe stable form," said Ben Tarbell, co-founder and CEO of Ebb Carbon. "Right now, there are very large voluntary carbon markets, large corporations willing to pay to remove carbon from the atmosphere to offset emissions in other parts of their business. In addition to Prelude, Ebb Carbon is backed by Evok Innovations, Congruent Ventures and Propeller.

Yet few readers today will place Ross’s name, let alone those of the “front-page girls” she celebrated. Papers with strapped budgets took on more women, a trajectory that mirrors the history of professions like teaching and nursing. Still, as late as the 1950s, Kroeger writes, “women journalists inched across a swinging rope bridge toward fuller acceptance but still in single file.” Their pluck went only so far. Between 1970 and 1983, anti-discrimination suits roiled The Times, Newsweek, Time, The Washington Post and The Associated Press, among other outlets. Before those proceedings, women had tended to cluster “on the bottom rungs of a company ladder with broken steps,” Kroeger writes.
Ebb Carbon has found a way to remove carbon from the atmosphere while making the ocean less acidic. Check out the 13-slide pitch deck Ebb Carbon used to nab $20 million in Series A funding. California-based Ebb Carbon, founded in 2021, aims to capture and store carbon dioxide in the ocean while simultaneously tackling ocean acidification. Ebb Carbon has developed an electrochemical process that removes acidity from seawater while enhancing its ability to store carbon dioxide. Ebb CarbonThe alkaline release then helps to balance the pH of seawater locally, Ebb Carbon claims.
